Notable News Events Relating to Substance Use in Rocky Mount, NC

In March 2023, the U.S. Attorney's Office Eastern District of North Carolina announced the prison sentencing of a Rocky Mount gang leader for his high-ranking role in a local drug trafficking operation. In a law enforcement effort titled Operation Caught Cold, federal agents arrested the leader of the G-Shine Bloods gang in Rocky Mount alongside 16 other defendants after a multi-year investigation led to the massive local seizure of illegal substances and firearms.

According to reports, law enforcement collected over 20 firearms, 4,389 dosage units of heroin, and 6,601 dosage units of a fentanyl mixture during this time. Investigators discovered that the Rocky Mount leader would distribute these illegal drugs throughout Nash and Edgecombe County using lower-ranking gang members. To highlight the consequences of fentanyl distribution, prosecutors pushed for a lengthy punishment for the Rocky Mount gang leader, which resulted in a 360-month sentence and a $220,211 restitution payment.

Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Rocky Mount, NC

The Coalition for Addiction, Recovery, and Education (C.A.R.E) was founded in Nash County in 2017 to provide substance abuse resources and education to Rocky Mount residents. The C.A.R.E coalition is made up of multiple community members, including local government officials, law enforcement members, and addiction support professionals on a mission to address and prevent substance abuse throughout Rocky Mount.

Through these various community partnerships, Rocky Mount residents can more effectively obtain substance addiction resources they need to help get their health back on track. The C.A.R.E Coalition also provides educational resources to Rocky Mount families and community leaders that can help them understand the risks of substance abuse and navigate common concerns such as overdose.
