Rockford, Illinois: Drug abuse trends

Winnebago County, the county that Rockford belongs to, is experiencing a rapid increase in opioid overdose deaths, especially in the last four years. The most significant increase was seen during the COVID-19 pandemic when people who struggled with addiction could not get the help they needed. Because of the isolation, they could not socialize or even go to anonymous meetings for people who struggle with drugs. Many started to cope with stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues by using drugs, leading to even more drug overdoses.

In 2020, there were 150 fatal overdoses in Winnebago County, and since 2016, the county has experienced more than 800 deaths connected to drug overdoses. The county is trying to lower the numbers with multiple local activities but has seen little success.

At first, the police wanted to pull a vehicle over on the highway, but the driver fled. They chased him, then he ran into a ditch and hid in the grass. Police took the man into custody, and now he is facing six charges, including drug possession, fleeing or eluding police, and carrying a weapon without a permit.
