Since 2020, Xylazine has become a significant drug threat in York County, where Rock Hill is located

Rock Hill, SC: Drug abuse trends

Rock Hill, situated in York County, has encountered a concerning emergence of a new drug threat since 2020—Xylazine. Although primarily intended for veterinary use as a sedative, this substance poses significant risks when consumed by humans. Xylazine has the capacity to profoundly slow down heart rate, potentially leading to fatal consequences. Narcan, the commonly used antidote for opioid-related overdoses, is ineffective against Xylazine due to its non-opioid nature.

York County has also been struggling with the persistent challenge of fentanyl. A recent encounter with fentanyl resulted in the death of a 17-year-old. According to the family, the young person's encounter with fentanyl was a one-time occurrence, yet it proved fatal.

Lieutenant Rainier emphasized that within Rock Hill, fentanyl and methamphetamine represent the most frequently seized illicit substances. However, law enforcement authorities have encountered pills containing a dangerous combination of five narcotics, including tramadol, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. Drug dealers often seek out the most cost-effective options to augment and mix their products, significantly heightening the risk associated with their consumption.

Three Rock Hill men found guilty in a multi-state drug operation

They were flying the drugs to California and shipping them back to Rock Hill, where they distributed them to local dealers. In one year, they sent more than 255 packages. They distributed 1000 grams of marijuana, one kilogram of heroin, 500 grams of methamphetamine, 400 grams of fentanyl, five kilograms of cocaine, and 280 grams of crack cocaine. The jury convicted the three men on all charges.
