The streets of Rio Piedras are safer now that a federal grand jury in the District of Puerto Rico has charged 41 violent gang members with a variety of charges, including possession of controlled substances, distribution, and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.
The drug trafficking ring, which was primarily operating out of San Juan, just 20 minutes from Rio Piedras, was responsible for distributing heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana, cocaine, and a variety of opioid pills. Joseph González, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI, San Juan Field Office, was quoted as saying, "We know this doesn't mean our work is done, and what I want to make clear is that we won't stop."
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Puerto Rico
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in opioid overdose deaths in Puerto Rico's prisons. According to the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics, there were 22 fentanyl-related deaths and 14 deaths related to unknown intoxication inside prisons during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Some local residents believe this is preventable and that drug entry into the prisons must be addressed, citing issues such as the recent discovery of 50 kilos of cocaine in the Las Cucharas prison in Ponce.
