In May 2019, a Richardson doctor and his wife, a registered nurse, were convicted of conspiring to distribute large quantities of amphetamine salts, oxycodone, hydrocodone, alprazolam and promethazine with codeine. They owned and operated a medical clinic in Richardson, Taylor Texas Medicine, from 2010 to 2012. The couple conspired to distribute these drugs without a medical need for them. North of Richardson, in Sherman, another doctor was also sentenced for writing prescriptions for opioids that were not medically required, which were connected to six drug-related deaths.
"The number of pills (being prescribed) was shocking. When doctors care more about the money they are making than anything else, people can die, and in his case, they did," said U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown. "The severity of the sentences for these doctors is the kind we see for dealers of large amounts of street drugs. And really, that is what these doctors became – just drug dealers."
