Substance abuse statistics for Reno, Nevada
Reno, NV: Drug abuse trends
Between January and June 2022, there were two deaths each day on average in Nevada. Opioids were involved in 88 percent of these deaths. During the same time frame, Washoe County reported 109 overdose deaths, and opioids played a similar role. One in every two deaths was linked to drugs containing fentanyl.
Fentanyl has quickly become the deadliest opioid on the black market due to its strength and prevalence. In Washoe County, it is the most common reason for drug overdose deaths, followed by methamphetamine. However, the rising issue is the combination of opioids and stimulants, and local initiatives need to adapt to polysubstance use to prevent another increase in overdose fatalities.
A Reno man was sentenced to prison for possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine
A 38-year-old Reno man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possessing fentanyl and methamphetamine and intent to distribute it to another person. The man pleaded guilty to one count of possession intending to distribute a controlled substance in August 2023 and was sentenced on November 13, 2023.
According to court documents, law enforcement identified him as the leading player in a drug trafficking organization based in California. In 2022, during a traffic stop, the man ignored police orders and fled the scene in his vehicle. During the car chase, the man threw a backpack containing a large quantity of methamphetamine and 1,000 counterfeit fentanyl pills out of the car. He then crashed the vehicle, causing it to catch fire, and fled on foot before being apprehended in a nearby restaurant parking lot.
When authorities searched his storage unit and residence, they found several hundred more counterfeit fentanyl pills and approximately four pounds of methamphetamine. In total, law enforcement seized 1,011 grams of fentanyl and 3,343 grams of methamphetamine.
