Reno, NV: Drug abuse trends
In 2020, heroin was present in 32 percent of emergency department encounters in Nevada. The number of emergency department encounters involving opioids or narcotics increased by 67 percent from 2010 to 2020. About 68 percent of opioid-related emergency department encounters were white non-Hispanic people between the ages of 25-34. Based on the statistics, this group is most affected by substance abuse in Nevada.
The drug overdose rate in Nevada increased by 23.2 percent from 2019 to 2020. The current death rate is 27.6, but Nevada aims to decrease it to 10.8.
Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Reno, NV
In 2020, a grant for 500,000 dollars was provided for services from January 2021 to December 2023. This grant is referred to as the Fresh Start Therapeutic Treatment Court and is designed to help people with substance abuse issues in the criminal justice system. The Fresh Start Therapeutic Program treats individuals that are considered to be at a high risk of repeat substance abuse, particularly DUI offenders, with evidence-based practices (EBP).
Nevada has developed a new two-year substance abuse prevention plan, which will take effect from 2021 through 2023. The primary mission of the Strategic Plan is to promote healthy behaviors and reduce the negative impact of drug use on the people in the community. The plan aims to nurture safer communities for healthier Nevadans who participate in their communities fully.
