In February 2022, the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration announced the arrest of a Raleigh police officer following an internal investigation that discovered he was distributing cocaine while on duty. Keven Rodriguez, a Field Operations Division Officer for the Raleigh Police Department, was charged with both cocaine distribution and firearm possession after the department received information about trafficking activity involving the on-duty cop.
According to reports, the Raleigh Police Department received information from a confidential source that Rodriguez met an individual in his patrol car and exchanged 56 grams of cocaine for $2,600 in cash. Because Rodriguez was in possession of his duty firearm at the time of the transaction, he was booked on both distribution and firearms charges and faces a mandatory penalty of 5 years in prison if convicted in court.
Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Raleigh, NC
Wake County, where Raleigh is located, offers both a Naloxone and Syringe Exchange Program to help residents reduce the health risks involved with opioid abuse. The Wake County Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition provide free Naloxone kits. These can be used in the event of an emergency overdose to reverse deadly side effects. The kits are available for people who actively use IV, people on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), and residents with a history of opioid abuse.
Additionally, there is also the Wake County Drug Overdose Prevention Initiative, which aims to reduce substance use disorders in at-risk populations, support harm-reduction strategies, and connect individuals with necessary services. In collaboration with various organizations, the initiative focuses on creating a coordinated infrastructure, reducing the oversupply of prescription opioids, and expanding treatment and recovery-oriented systems of care.
Wake County's efforts also include a Rapid Responder Post Overdose Response Team, a partnership involving Wake County Public Health, Wake County EMS, and Healing Transitions. This team follows up with individuals and their families 24-48 hours post-overdose to encourage engagement in treatment and recovery support.
