It also regularly meets with the local Overdose Fatality Review Board, conducts proactive enforcement, and more. The task force also has two Overdose Death Investigators (ODI's) who respond to nearly every overdose call in the area, attempting to collect information leading to the dealer who provided the drugs to the deceased.
Recent Policy Proposals Regarding Drug Use in Arizona
Prescott Valley resident Ashley Dunn was just 26 years old when she encountered a fatal dose of fentanyl. Her mother, Josephine Dunn, was one of several grieving parents to testify in front of the Arizona House Health and Human Services Committee, which later voted in support of a bill that is commonly known as The Ashley Dunn Act.
The bill, HB 2469, would allow drug dealers who sell substances that are a "contributing factor" in an overdose death to be charged with "drug trafficking homicide," a charge that would be on par with first-degree murder. First-time offenders would face 10 to 25 years in prison, and a repeat offender would face up to 29 years behind bars. The next step is for the bill to be heard in front of the full house.
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Prescott Valley
In March 2023, local police discovered a dangerous new drug at the scene of a recent overdose in Prescott Valley. According to the Prescott Valley Police Department, this is the first time the drug, known on the streets as "gray death," has been found in the city.
Gray death is a designer synthetic combo drug that is essentially a mix of various substances such as heroin, fentanyl, U-47700, other potent opioids, and/or other illegal substances such as amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or cocaine. Gray death has also been reported to have "naloxone resistance," making overdoses extremely difficult to reverse.
