Portsmouth, VA: Drug abuse trends

According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), only fourteen states saw a more considerable increase in drug overdose deaths than Virginia from May 2019 to May 2020. Experts predict that drug overdose deaths will continue to increase. Kathrin Horon, a forensic epidemiologist from the Virginia Department of Health, says, "It's kind of a terrifying time. Until we control the fentanyl crisis, I just really don't see our numbers going down at all."

In 2021, the state broke its record for the second consecutive year, with at least 2,656 people dying from drug overdoses. Although the increase was not as high as in 2020, when the number of people dying jumped by 42 percent, it was still a 15 percent increase in deadly overdoses from the previous year. Fentanyl was the most commonly involved drug in overdose deaths. In 2021, at least 91 percent of fatal drug overdoses in Portsmouth were related to fentanyl.
