Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Plano DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Plano, TX

Establishing paternity benefits not only the child but the mother and the father as well. If the couple is not married, the father has no legal rights toward his child until they establish paternity. Paternity can be established by signing an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP) or by court order.

AOP is a legal document allowing parents to establish paternity. If help is needed filling out the document, the AOP Hotline can be called or requests can be submitted online. If the mother and the father disagree on paternity, the court will likely ask the father to do a DNA test.

DNA test reunites Texas woman with her father

A Texas woman, Susan Chambers, wanted to find her biological father, but the only thing she knew was that she was conceived on the train in September 1966, where he was a passenger. With the hope that it would lead her to her biological father, she decided to take a DNA test.

Susan's DNA test results matched her with a man who was her biological father's grandson. The two messaged back and forth a bit, and the man asked his grandfather for possible connections. His grandfather, Bob, confirmed that he was with a woman whose name he did not know on the train back in 1966. Susan and Bob started emailing each other and tried to find out more about one another, and eventually, they decided to meet. She could not believe she had found her birth father after 52 years!

They both described it as a beautiful time spent together, and they had already planned another meeting. Even though Bob had no idea he had a daughter, it was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. Bob has expressed that he is thankful to be reunited with his daughter at last.
