In 2020, Texas experienced one of the highest numbers of people fatally overdosing, with more than 4,000 overdose deaths. This was a 33 percent increase compared to the year before. Many experts attribute this increase to the opioid epidemic and the challenges posed by COVID-19.

During the pandemic, individuals turned to substance use as a coping mechanism, inadvertently increasing the risk of overdose incidents. The combination of heightened substance abuse, particularly opioid misuse, in conjunction with the pandemic-related restrictions, contributed to a concerning spike in overdose fatalities. Although the numbers in 2021 demonstrated a slight decline, with 3,136 individuals succumbing to drug overdoses, the situation remained an ongoing cause for alarm.

Pharr police seize $10 million worth of liquid methamphetamine

Pharr police released information in early 2022 regarding a large drug bust in the city. According to the release, a police officer was patrolling the area in South Lamar Drive in Pharr when he noticed three men pouring liquids from multiple 55-gallon barrels into 5-gallon buckets. The police officer called for backup, and they discovered that the liquid was methamphetamine.

The street value of this amount of methamphetamine would be around $10 million. Due to a large amount of seized substances, the case was turned over to the Assistant United States Attorney.
