Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Perry, FL
In May 2023, the U.S. Attorney's Office Northern District of Florida announced an indictment against a Perry woman for her role in a large-scale drug trafficking operation. According to indictment reports, the 55-year-old Perry resident was charged with multiple charges, including conspiracy to possess and distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine. Due to prior trafficking convictions, the Perry woman faces a minimum of 25 years and up to life in prison for her combined charges.
During an ongoing investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Taylor County Sheriff's Office, and other neighboring law enforcement groups, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on the Perry resident near exit 258 on I-10. Inside the vehicle, law enforcement discovered drug paraphernalia as well as 720 grams of methamphetamine. Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Perry, FL
Across Perry and the surrounding Florida state, fentanyl has become a leading cause of deadly drug overdoses. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more powerful than heroin and has created increasing concern with state lawmakers for quite some time now. Under prior Florida law, a Perry resident who was found in possession of fentanyl test strips could face drug paraphernalia charges, which lawmakers found could impede one's ability to prevent a deadly overdose.
So, in June 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 164, which revised the state definition of "drug paraphernalia" to remove certain narcotic drug testing products, including fentanyl test strips. With this harm reduction effort, Perry residents can now lawfully obtain and possess fentanyl test strips to prevent potential drug poisonings. The state of Florida is now the 36th state in the nation to pass such legislation decriminalizing test strips.
