Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Perry DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Perry, FL - DNA Testing

Importance of Establishing Paternity in Perry, FL

For unmarried Perry parents, establishing paternity is a legal process that must be completed by unmarried Perry parents after they have a child in the state of Florida. Because Florida law cannot automatically assume a child's biological father without the presence of marriage, establishing paternity will be used to declare the legal father, grant him paternal rights, and have his name placed on the child's birth certificate.

Furthermore, the legal establishment of paternity will also be necessary if either parent wishes to request monthly child support assistance from the non-custodial parent. In support of the child, establishing paternity also broadens a Perry child's ability to collect benefits from their biological father, including health insurance coverage, social security benefits, and military benefits.

Methods of Establishing Paternity in Perry, FL

Perry parents can establish paternity via one of two methods — by completing an Acknowledgment of Paternity or through a court order. If both parents are confident in the paternity of their child or if DNA testing has already determined the father, the simplest method is to sign an Acknowledgment of Paternity at the hospital or a later date through the Florida Bureau of Vital Statistics.

In cases where a parent denies the paternity of a Perry child or fails to properly establish paternity, the parent seeking the establishment will need to submit a petition to the Taylor County Court. This will allow a judge to issue a summons for the opposing parent and require them to undergo DNA testing in support of the claim. If the father is identified, paternity will then be legally established.

Paternity Laws and Regulations in Perry, FL

In 2023, Florida Statute 63.054 established the Putative Father Registry program for unmarried fathers who wish to claim the paternity of a child. Any man claiming to be the unmarried father of a Perry child can register with the program to partially preserve his paternal rights. Registering allows a Perry man to receive notice of any legal event of adoption involving his assumed child, where he may be able to potentially deny the adoption and legally establish his paternity using DNA testing.
