Pearland, Texas: Drug abuse trends

Pearland falls under Brazoria County, which experienced a significant growth in drug overdose deaths in 2020. Over the years, the county has implemented multiple initiatives to try to prevent these numbers from increasing. One such initiative is the Bay Area Council on Drugs & Alcohol (BACODA), which is a non-profit group that provides resources and support to people who struggle with substance abuse disorder (SUD). BACODA focuses on educating the community about the risks of drug abuse, preventing youth from starting substance use, assisting with interventions, and helping people with SUD recover.

In Texas, drug overdose fatalities grew extensively during the pandemic by about 32 percent. The growth was driven primarily by opioids, especially fentanyl. From January 2019 to January 2021, the number of opioid overdose deaths in Texas almost doubled, with another 30 percent increase towards the end of the year.

As in other states, Texas has seen a rise in drugs like heroin spiked with fentanyl. People are often unaware that the drugs were spiked, leading to deadly fentanyl-related overdoses. As little as two milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal and easily go undetected by people who believe they are only using a different substance.

Police seized heroin, crack, meth, and marijuana in Brazoria County

Brazoria County Police were investigating a suspected drug activity which led them to arrest a 38-year-old man. Authorities obtained a search warrant for an apartment where the man was thought to be selling heroin, where they found more than 29 grams of heroin, 18 grams of Xanax, 12 grams of crack cocaine, 12 grams of methamphetamine, 45 grams of Adderall, 32 grams of marijuana and over $26,000.

The man could face a maximum of 20 years for each controlled substance charge if convicted.
