Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Paso Robles, CA
Over the past decade, the city of Paso Robles and surrounding San Luis Obispo County area have witnessed a spike in opioid-related deaths and abuse concerns. To better address the ongoing opioid epidemic and deadly effects it's brought to local communities, county officials established the SLO Opioid Safety Coalition in January 2016. This comes in part after the county received one of 12 grants from the California HealthCare Foundation, which is working to address the California opioid epidemic in a statewide effort.
Through the Coalition, opioid drug misuse prevention is spearheaded by numerous community members, including law enforcement, medical professionals, and certified drug treatment professionals, who have been gathered into various action teams. These teams include opioid data collection and monitoring, safe prescribing and health care, and Naloxone response action teams that work to tackle the concern of county-wide opioid abuse and overdose.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Paso Robles, CA
The California State Board of Pharmacy implemented new controlled substance prescribing mandates in 2021 to increase monitoring and abuse reduction efforts across the state. Beginning January 1, 2021, medical professionals who dispense controlled substance prescriptions must now only use updated prescription forms provided by the state.
These forms feature specific serial numbers that aid in the reduction of illegal doctor shopping and work to better track the flow of prescription drugs across the state. Likewise, new regulations also require prescribers to report dispensing data into the CURES prescription monitoring database within one working day following a patient's visit to maintain statewide substance use monitoring efforts.
