Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Pascagoula

Like many other cities across the U.S., Pascagoula has a fentanyl problem. According to Gulfport DEA Agent Chris Bell, South Mississippi leads the state in fentanyl overdoses. This statement came following two drug raids on homes in Jackson County, including one in north Pascagoula. The raid led to the seizure of several bags of pills and two pill presses.

Sadly, the problem with drug overdoses spans well beyond Jackson County. Col. Steven Maxwell, Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, reports that there were over 500 drug overdose deaths in Mississippi in 2021, and over 200 overdose fatalities reported as of August 2022.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Pascagoula

If you're arrested for a nonviolent drug-related crime in Pascagoula, you may be able to get a second chance. Jackson County is served by the Nineteenth Judicial District Intervention Court, which helps drug offenders get their lives back on track by providing drug treatment and intense supervision along with frequent drug testing and court appearances.

It's estimated that the Mississippi drug intervention courts have saved taxpayers more than a billion dollars since the program began in 2006, with savings ranging from reduced incarceration costs to fewer healthcare costs related to drug-addicted babies.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Pascagoula

In 2022, Feds took down a drug network known as the "Crossley Hill Boys," which was responsible for a number of drug overdose deaths. The organization was said to be responsible for selling drugs that led to at least four fatal overdoses and "numerous" hospitalizations. A total of 42 people were indicted, including one man who admitted to buying drugs from a man at a Pascagoula gas station. Discussing the bust, Assistant U.S. Attorney Luis Peral, says it's an "impact case," pointing out that "it had a definitely adverse impact on the community here when you look at the overdose deaths."
