Having legalized the recreational use of marijuana back in 2012, Colorado was one of the first states in the country to fully legalize marijuana beyond medical use. Ironically, back in May of 2019, more than 40 individuals were arrested in the largest black-market marijuana bust in Colorado history. The investigation first began in 2016, when local law enforcement began investigating a network of marijuana cultivators illegally distributing large amounts of product.
Spanning across multiple counties, more than 250 locations were searched in the bust, including 22 Douglas County businesses and homes in upscale residential neighborhoods. In total, more than 80,000 marijuana plants along with 4,500 pounds of finished products were seized from the bust. Following the arrests, United States Attorney Jason Dunn stated "Colorado has become the epicenter of black-market marijuana in the United States," due to the ease of production and intent to distribute outside the state.
