Notable News Events Relating to Substance Use in Orange City, FL
In June 2023, the Volusia County Sheriff's Department announced the arrest of more than 40 people in and around the Orange City area following the ongoing discovery and investigation of a massive drug ring. The multi-jurisdictional investigation, titled "Operation Daly Dose," involved the Volusia Bureau of Investigation, West Volusia Narcotics Task Force, the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to investigate fentanyl and cocaine trafficking operations in Central Florida.
According to reports, law enforcement officials estimated that roughly 6 to 8 kilos of deadly fentanyl have made its way into the Volusia and Lake County regions each month due to widespread drug operations taking place in the area. Across various Operation Daly Dose raids, law enforcement groups were able to collect nearly 2,319 grams of fentanyl—which equates to approximately 1.5 million doses—as well as connect a local drug overdose death to the ring's drug supply.
Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Orange City, FL
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill in May 2023 that created new criminal penalty minimums for drug dealers who produce and distribute candy-colored fentanyl tablets. This comes after a growing concern across the state regarding the production of dangerous fentanyl tablets that resemble colored candy and how drug dealers could be using them to target younger individuals.
Under HB 1359, those found producing, selling, or delivering these types of fentanyl tablets now face a mandatory minimum prison sentence of three years in the state of Florida. Likewise, adults who provide minors with these drugs could face up to life in prison alongside a $1 million dollar fine depending on the severity of the case. These new laws went into effect on October 1, 2023, and will continue to work to combat the heightened risk of fentanyl overdose and abuse across Florida.
