Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Omak, WA and Okanogan County
Experts Say...
James Wallace, Okanogan County's health officer and a family physician at Family Health Centers (FHC), said he's seen a spike in overdoses in the county. The number of opioid overdoses significantly increased in Omak and Okanogan County from 2020-2022. However, the use of Narcan has reduced overdose deaths in the county. Fentanyl, which is 25 times more potent than morphine, played a role in the rise of overdoses. Narcan is a nasal spray that reverses the effects of fentanyl and other opioids and can prevent overdose deaths. Wallace said that Okanogan County drug users and their families and friends carry Narcan to potentially save a life, and residents can obtain the medication with no questions asked. "We assume they want to save the life of a loved one," he said. He added that first responders also carry the life-saving medication.
