Six teenagers were charged with murder after a botched drug deal in Olathe's Black Bob Park. Four of the youths involved were 14 years old, while the other two were 13. The teens allegedly went to the park to purchase marijuana from a 19-year-old drug dealer named Marco Cardino. Cardino and an associate allegedly tried to rob them at gunpoint. During the altercation, Cardino was shot and killed.
Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Olathe
Following a recent spike in opioid-related deaths, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners voted to participate in multi-national settlements with the opioid industry for its role in contributing to the opioid epidemic. In 2019, there were 34 opioid-related deaths in Johnson County. By 2021, this number had increased to 86. According to Johnston County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Diane Peterson, many of these deaths are attributed to the use of fentanyl or oxycodone combined with other drugs, such as Xanax or alprazolam.
In July of 2022, the country received its first distribution, in the amount of $113,560. The funds are to be used for activities and projects aimed at reducing, mitigating, or treating the effects of substance abuse addiction. The settlement payments are expected to continue over the next 18 years and could total over $3 million.

The Municipal Prosecutor for the City of Olathe has established a pretrial diversion program for drug-related crimes.
