Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in North Charleston, SC
In April 2021, an ongoing investigation in North Charleston led to the search and seizure of numerous drugs, firearms, and other illegal items associated with drug distribution. Authorities seized 887 grams of marijuana, 230 grams of cocaine, 3,187 grams of ecstasy, and five firearms.
In February 2022, 12 people were arrested and charged after the take-down of a North Charleston drug trafficking organization. Charges included the conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and cocaine. Some of them faced firearm charges. All 12 individuals were North Charleston residents.
Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in North Charleston, SC
The city of North Charleston has an initiative called Paths to Recovery that aims to raise awareness of mental health and substance use disorders using evidence-based prevention strategies, collaborating with other agencies and organizations, and promoting substance use prevention and resources for mental health. The city offers North Charleston residents struggling with substance use disorder several resources for education, support, and quality treatment options. Free Narcan training classes are also offered. Narcan is a life-saving medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.
