In September 2023, the Niagara Falls Police Department announced the arrest of a local drug dealer after officers discovered a significant amount of fentanyl during a raid at a nearby residence. The dealer was already wanted on an indictment for third-degree drug sales and possession, which sparked a nine-month investigation led by the Narcotics and Intelligence Division.

Before the wanted Niagara Falls man's arrest, law enforcement raided a home on Hyde Park Boulevard, resulting in the discovery of more than two pounds of fentanyl. While no one was at the residence at the time of the raid, officers later conducted a traffic stop on the suspect, where he was arrested. In addition to his warrant charges, the Niagara Falls man was additionally charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, New York's most serious drug charge.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Use in Niagara Falls, NY

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed new legislation in November 2023 to help enhance public health and combat the ongoing concerns of opioid addiction. Through S.2099C, also known as Matthew's Law, Niagara Falls residents will now have expanded access to fentanyl testing and overdose treatment supplies which can potentially help reduce the growing occurrence of accidental drug overdoses.

For quite some time, residents have faced difficulties accessing both fentanyl and xylazine test strips that could have been used to prevent cases of accidental drug overdose deaths. Now, under Matthew's Law, Niagara Falls healthcare professionals and pharmacists can access a New York State Department of Health ordering system to easily obtain test strips and emergency naloxone kits and distribute them to any resident in need.
