New Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Newport Beach, CA

In April 2022, the United States Attorney's Office announced multiple criminal cases against seven drug dealers who are being held responsible for selling fentanyl-laced narcotics throughout Orange County. According to reports, one of the cases involved the sale of fentanyl-laced narcotics which resulted in the overdose death of three people in Newport Beach.

The drug overdose victims included two Newport Beach minors and one student at a local community college who were all unaware they were using fentanyl-laced drugs. Investigation details state that the dealers knew their products contained fentanyl but did not disclose this information to buyers. The defendants have been charged with the distribution of fentanyl resulting in a death which, if convicted, incurs a 20-year minimum prison sentence.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Newport Beach, CA

Orange County recently announced a new approach to help better tackle the recurring cycle of mental illness, addiction, and incarceration amongst the local homeless population in Newport Beach. The Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a new system that would enhance various substance abuse treatments, mental health care, and vocational training for local law enforcement.

According to program officials, 85% of recurring homeless offenders in Orange County have reported substance use disorders along with 46% having moderate to severe mental illnesses. Through this new initiative, the county will offer many new opportunities that aid in breaking this harmful cycle, including Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for law enforcement and public awareness campaigns that work to reduce mental health and substance abuse disorder stigmas.
