News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Newburgh, IN
In February 2023, a Newburgh man and woman were arrested after law enforcement discovered a large amount of drugs in their possession. Following an investigation involving potential drug sales, the Warrick County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant along the 5500 block of Stacer Road. Inside the Newburgh home, law enforcement discovered two pounds of marijuana, two grams of fentanyl, and various drug paraphernalia.
Following the discovery, Warrick County law enforcement arrested the two Newburgh residents and charged them with multiple felonies, including dealing narcotic drugs, maintaining a common nuisance, and possession of narcotic drugs. While both have been released on bond, law enforcement noted that the Newburgh suspects are still involved in an open investigation, and more charges are expected to be brought against them.
Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Newburgh, IN
Back in March 2022, the Indiana General Assembly passed House Enrolled Act 1193. This bill created a framework for how opioid settlement funds would be distributed across local and county areas, including Newburgh and the surrounding Warrick County region. These settlement funds came in part of a nationwide lawsuit against big pharmaceutical companies that were recently found responsible in federal court for their fueling role in the ongoing opioid epidemic.
As part of the settlement framework, state lawmakers decided on various core focuses where the funds could be allocated to address local drug abuse concerns. Focuses include expanded naloxone training for first responders and schools, treatment services for the incarcerated population, and the introduction of various evidence-based youth prevention programs. Payments to Warrick County began in late 2022 with fund distribution expected to continue for the next 18 years.
