For the last three years, drug overdose deaths in New York State have increased annually by 0.52 percent. In 2021, the drug overdose rate in NYS was 18.2 out of every 100,000 residents, which is 12.08 percent lower than the national average. Additionally, 2.30 percent of all deaths in the state are caused by drug overdoses.
New Rochelle falls under Westchester County, which also experienced a rise in overdose deaths. In 2020, there were 119 overdose deaths in the county, which was 28 more than in 2019. In response to the significant increase in overdose deaths, the Opioid Response and Overdose Prevention Initiative (ORI) launched in Westchester County in February 2022. ORI aims to identify the communities that need support the most, educate and train the community about naloxone—a life-saving drug that can reverse the effects of opioid overdose, and increase the availability of treatment services.
Judge sentenced leader of drug trafficking organizations to seven years in prison
In July 2021, a man from New Rochelle was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for distributing cocaine and leading a drug trafficking organization. The illegal organization operated from several buildings in New Rochelle, including a grocery store called SuperMercado Mexico. The former drug trafficking leader was also sentenced to four years of supervised release and forfeiture of Mercedes Benz and $150,000.
