Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in New City, NY
In 1982, the Community Awareness Network for a Drug-Free Life and Environment (CANDLE) coalition was established in Rockland County. Their core mission has been to prevent issues of substance abuse and violence among local youth. Through prevention education and resistance strategies, the coalition aims to improve the health and climate of local communities and schools.
For example, the Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse (VAASA) initiative trains and educates high school varsity athletes on drug-free practices. These students then relay their knowledge to local elementary students to act as positive role models. Furthermore, the Teen Intervene initiative is an early intervention program that offers individualized sessions to New City adolescents displaying early stages of substance abuse issues.
