Middlesex County experienced alarming surges in substance abuse-related fatalities between 2016 and 2020, with deaths involving alcohol increasing by 52 percent. Opioid-related overdoses between 2013 and 2020 increased by a staggering 199 percent. The county, however, made progress in reducing the prescription rates of opioids. Despite this progress, the county still had the third-highest drug overdose deaths of all New Jersey counties in 2021.
Excessive drinking was reported by 15 percent of residents in Middlesex County. Heroin also grew as a significant concern, primarily among individuals aged 25 to 44, with 40 percent of rehab admissions citing it as their primary substance of abuse in 2020.
Police arrested 11 people after drug raids in New Brunswick
In September 2021, police arrested eleven people from Franklin and New Brunswick after they executed search warrants at five different locations. Authorities were already working on the investigation for a month before executing warrants. All eleven individuals were arrested on drug charges. During the search, police found and seized heroin, cocaine, paraphernalia, firearms, money and ammunition.
