Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Naperville, IL
In March 2022, a Naperville man was arrested and held on a $5 million bond for his role in the drug overdose death of an Addison woman. According to reports, Courvoisier Thomas, 38, was arrested after being accused of selling the Addison woman a deadly mixture of fentanyl and fluorofentanyl back in November 2021. On the day of the drug transaction, the Addison woman was found unresponsive in her home and was later pronounced dead at Glen Oaks Hospital.
During the subsequent investigation, law enforcement discovered that the fentanyl mixture was the cause of death. Thomas was charged with one count of drug-induced homicide in relation to the fatality. The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office hopes this incident can be viewed as a strong message among the community of the consequences of those supplying narcotics to local residents.
Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Naperville, IL
To help better curb the abuse of prescription medications, the city of Naperville created the Prescription Drug Drop Box Program. Through this local initiative, residents can choose from 10 locations to drop off any unwanted prescription medications discreetly and safely. These drop-off boxes are located at local fire departments and are accessible to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Through this Naperville initiative, the proper disposal of unwanted medications helps prevent certain addictive substances from ending up in the wrong hands, such as adolescent household members. Not to mention, this initiative helps combat local water supply contamination, as residents have a choice to safely dispose of medication rather than flush it down the toilet or sink.
