Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Muskogee DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

There are several ways that a child's paternity can be established in Oklahoma in addition to marriage including:

Local DNA Stories
Paternity played a role in the 2017 federal trial of Stephen Lester Greer, a Tulsa physician who worked at the VA Hospital in Muskogee. Greer pled guilty to a variety of charges in federal court related to a sexual relationship he had with a female patient, a veteran. The patient became pregnant with Greer's baby and the relationship was revealed when she was admitted to inpatient behavioral health treatment at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Douglas A. Horn who prosecuted Greer, he "violated his oath as a doctor by having inappropriate sexual contact with a female veteran that he was treating" and instructed her to lie about the paternity of the baby.

Unmarried parents in Oklahoma have specific guidance from the state. According to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, "If either the mother or the father has any doubts about who the father is, they should get DNA Testing done." The state human services department advises that parents shouldn't sign the Acknowledgement of Paternity form unless they are "sure about who the father is."
