Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Muncie DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Test Reunites Siblings in Muncie

Mike Watson, also known by the nickname "Diamond," was adopted as an infant in Indianapolis in 1958. In 1994, he reconnected with his birth family, but his sister, who was two years older, was missing. Family lore was that the child was left with a babysitter or taken by a social worker. There had never been a police report, an adoption certificate, or a death certificate—the child had just "vanished."

Thanks to five female genealogical researchers, several DNA tests, and a Facebook page called "Find Deborah Kay," his sister, Debbie Phillips, was located. The two reunited at her home in Muncie in 2019 and the rest of the family soon followed. Phillips was thrilled to connect with her family, saying, "I can't believe I've got siblings."

How to Establish Paternity in Muncie

In the state of Indiana, when a child is born to unmarried parents, there are two ways to establish legal paternity. The first is for both parents to sign a paternity affidavit, which can be completed at the hospital within 72 hours of the child's birth or at the health department in the county where the child is born. For children born in Muncie, affidavits can be filed at the Delaware County Health Department, located at 125 N Mulberry St., Muncie, IN 47305.

If there is a dispute over the child's paternity, then one or both parents must file a paternity action in court. In this case, the judge will typically order DNA genetic testing to confirm whether the man in question is the child's biological father before ruling on the case.

Important Benefits of Establishing Paternity

When unmarried parents have a good relationship, they may wonder whether going through the process of establishing legal paternity is worth the effort. According to the Dixon & Moseley law firm, which serves clients in Muncie and the surrounding area, a child's father has no legal rights until legal paternity is established. He cannot petition the courts for visitation or custody and the child's mother cannot petition for child support. In addition, the child will have no legal rights to the father's health insurance or veterans' or Social Security benefits and the father has no legal right to make parental decisions for the child. Establishing legal paternity ensures all parties involved have full rights related to the child's paternal relationship.
