In August 2022, a search warrant for fraud executed by Mountain View police led to a drug bust in Mountain View. During the search warrant, authorities discovered paraphernalia used for methamphetamine manufacturing. The Mountain View man was arrested on August 16, 2022, after attempting to purchase a BMW at a BMW dealership using a fake driver's license. Officers discovered multiple victim credit cards and also that he had warrants for other crimes of the same nature.
In October 2022, twenty-seven people were charged with drug trafficking at a Mountain View grocery store. Employees at the store were working with gang members to assist with selling drugs funded through food assistance benefit fraud. According to Deputy District Attorney Robert Hickey, the store wasn't actually being used as a store, and employees were committing "massive fraud." They stole about $2 million in food assistance benefits, some of which was used to buy drugs from gang members.

The number of fentanyl-related deaths in Mountain View and Santa Clara County significantly increased between 2018-2020. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80-100 times more potent than morphine.
"The high number of fentanyl deaths is extremely troubling and worrisome, especially as we see it happening to both teenagers and adults, particularly young adults," said Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner, Dr. Michelle Jorden. "Fentanyl can be found in fake pills, powders, and other drugs. Even one pill, a fragment of a pill, or one snort can be fatal."
