News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Moreno Valley, CA

In March 2023, the U.S. Attorney's Office Southern District of California announced the prison sentencing of a Moreno Valley man found guilty of importing massive amounts of fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills. According to evidence presented by prosecutors, the Moreno Valley resident smuggled the pills from Mexico using a hidden compartment built into the roof of his pickup truck.

Following the discovery of the narcotics and the suspect's arrest, he went on to claim that an accomplice set him up to import drugs into the vehicle without his knowledge. However, after evidence of a prison phone call that showed the suspect bragging about his crime was presented to the jury, he received a guilty verdict. The Moreno Valley man was charged with the importation of fentanyl and sentenced to 200 months in federal prison.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Moreno Valley, CA

In 2021, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors developed a fentanyl abuse awareness campaign in an effort to reduce the rising cases of overdose deaths. Fentanyl is a highly dangerous synthetic opioid often found laced in illegal street drugs, including counterfeit pills and heroin. Fentanyl is not only the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in Riverside County but also the entire nation.

This initiative establishes a multidisciplinary committee that aims to inform the public about the dangers of fentanyl through various campaigns and community outreach. The committee is also required to provide quarterly reports on the county's efforts to fight fentanyl abuse, identify response gaps, and recommend additional solutions.
