Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Monroe, MI

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office recently became the first department in the state of Michigan to become certified in providing opioid use disorder (OUD) medication and treatment to those currently incarcerated. The certification was awarded by the Wayne State University Center for Behavioral Health and Justice, which now allows the Monroe County jail system to provide opioid use disorder screenings, OUD medication treatment, and psychosocial services for inmates.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office hopes that the implementation of this new initiative will help inmates better tackle their substance abuse concerns and reduce their chances of deadly overdose once released. According to reports, approximately 19% of the inmates screened at the time of booking are at risk for opioid use disorder and are being quickly referred to the in-jail medical team.
