Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Mission Hills, CA

With ongoing effects of the opioid epidemic being seen across Mission Hills, Los Angeles County, and the surrounding California state, the Statewide Opioid Safety (SOS) Workgroup was created in 2014. Introduced by the California Department of Public Health, the SOS Workgroup brings together more than 40 state and non-government stakeholder organizations and agencies to introduce and expand on efforts to reduce opioid addiction, overdose deaths, and misuse.

The efforts created by the SOS Workgroup are broken into various strategies which approach the issue of opioid abuse from multiple angles. One strategy is to promote safe prescribing, in which California healthcare professionals are to follow safe prescribing practices and electronic prescribing rules to reduce access to those looking to abuse opioids. Another strategy is to increase harm reduction tactics, including safe disposal and drug take back programs as well as syringe exchange services, to reduce the spread of infectious disease that accompanies opioid drug abuse.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Mission Hills, CA

Approved in 2018, the state of California passed Assembly Bill 2760 to help reduce the ongoing concern of deadly overdose caused by opioid abuse. Under the new law, when healthcare professionals prescribe high potency opioids or prescribe to those with an increased risk of overdose, they must also offer a Naloxone prescription. Naloxone is an overdose treatment drug used in the event of an emergency opioid overdose to help reverse deadly side effects. Furthermore, the prescriber must also provide education on how to administer the drug to ensure effective use.
