Local Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Miramar, FL

In August 2022, federal law enforcement announced the raid of a Miramar-area pharmacy after an investigation discovered evidence that implicated the location as the largest opioid pill mill in the state of Florida. "Pill mill" is a law enforcement term used to identify an illegal operation, often a doctor's office or pharmacy, that inappropriately prescribes controlled substances for non-medical or invalid reasons.

The investigation found several opioid prescriptions that were believed to have been routed through the Miramar pharmacy, Healthplus, by outside physicians who failed to properly treat patients and rather diverted pills into the community for illicit use. Investigators also believe Healthplus worked with several wholesalers to get large supplies of Oxycontin, though full investigation details remain private as the case remains open.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Miramar, FL

In an effort to crack down on opioid dealers and traffickers in the state of Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 95 into law. The new bill significantly enhances criminal penalties for the sale of distribution of opioids, including fentanyl, in Florida. As Florida battles surging numbers of opioid-related overdose deaths, state officials hope HB 95 sends a strong warning to drug dealers that such illicit activity will not be tolerated.

Aside from fentanyl, HB 95 added methamphetamine to the list of controlled substances that can subject a dealer to a conviction for first-degree felony murder in the event it causes the overdose death of an individual. Furthermore, HB 95 enhances penalties for the sale of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a drug abuse treatment facility in Florida.
