Max's Mission is a non-profit named after a 25-year-old that died from a heroin overdose in 2013. The mission aims to educate and provide resources to battle the opioid epidemic in Medford, Jackson County, and surrounding counties. It also distributes naloxone, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. The mission hosts several naloxone education events and distributes naloxone kits. Their efforts have saved at least 85 lives in the area in four months. Medford and Jackson County residents can find resources for addiction treatment, needle exchange programs, and mental health crisis information.
Experts Say...
Julia Pinsky, the mother of Max and co-founder of Max's Mission, said, "People are now dying much quicker. People are turning blue and falling to the ground." Pinsky said it takes more naloxone to reverse overdoses, and a person can die within just three minutes, so a much quicker response is needed. She also said that fentanyl has a large profit margin. "Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that's easily manufactured. Cartels no longer have to wait for a crop to be harvested." She continued, "It affects every socioeconomic group that you can imagine, from people on the street to people who are quite comfortably off. It's not just 'those people.' That's a huge part of the stigma," Pinsky said.
