Initially, the drug was manufactured to help cancer patients with pain, but soon, people started abusing it. Since fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine, it quickly became the highest overdose risk drug. An alarming number of Americans and Texans die from drug overdoses each year, and fentanyl plays a big part.
In McKinney, marijuana laced with fentanyl was discovered in high schools, leading to two students' hospitalization. Even a tiny amount of this drug can be deadly, and they were fortunate to have survived. A dosage of 700 micrograms can be fatal, and if there is a higher amount of this drug, it is almost certain it will be deadly.
Local initiatives to curb substance abuse in McKinney, TX
McKinney belongs to Collin County, where locals created the Substance Abuse Program. Their main goal is to provide prevention from alcohol and drug use and intervention services to Collin County residents. These services include education, referrals, information, and assessments.
In September 2021, The Coalition for McKinney Drug Free Youth and McKinney ISD partnered up and started a program called Too Good for Drugs.
