Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Mayagüez, PR
In March 2021, the District of Puerto Rico announced a federal grand jury indictment of 30 violent gang members for conspiring to and aiding in possessing and distributing controlled substances in the Mayagüez area. The investigation was completed in partnership with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Puerto Rico Police Bureau (PRPB) Mayagüez Strike Force in an effort to reduce widespread drug activity.
According to reports, the investigation began in 2017 when officials discovered a Mayagüez drug ring was operating out of a local public housing project. There the gang would distribute cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. Further investigation discovered that the Mayagüez drug trafficking gang would also establish various drug points throughout the housing project and often move to avoid police detection.
At the time of arrest, four suppliers and 26 narcotics sellers were arrested. Each faced varying charges for their specific roles in the drug trafficking operation. If convicted, the defendants could face a minimum 10-year and maximum life prison sentence.
Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Mayagüez, PR
In 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it would provide further funding for the ongoing Puerto Rico Safe Neighborhood Project. According to the PRPB, drug trafficking and distribution accounts for roughly 70% of all criminal activity across the island. With this activity comes highly dangerous gang turf wars that work to control drug points located in Mayagüez and surrounding area neighborhoods.
In an effort to reduce drug trafficking, firearms violations, assaults, and homicides, the Puerto Rico Safe Neighborhoods Project's 2021 funding will help expand on tools such as gunshot detection technology. With this sort of tool, local law enforcement can more effectively locate illegal gun activity, which is often accompanied by gang drug trafficking and distribution activity.
