Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Martinez DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Tests in Martinez GA

Experts Say...

Georgia attorney, Cara Sprouse Row, explains the steps to establishing paternity in Georgia. "For married couples, paternity is easily established," she said, "the husband of the mother is presumed to be the biological and legal father of the children if they are born during the marriage or within nine months of it ending." But she explains that it's more difficult when the parents are unwed. "The father has the option to voluntarily accept paternity by either signing the child's birth documentation at the hospital or by submitting a Paternity Acknowledgement Form (obtained at a local vital records office) at a later time."

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Martinez, GA

If two unmarried parents agree about who the father is, they can sign a voluntary Paternity Acknowledgment form to establish paternity. If there is any question from either parent about who the father is, DNA testing for paternity can be requested. DNA samples must be submitted from the mother, alleged father, and child. If the DNA test shows that the man is the father and he agrees to sign the voluntary Paternity Acknowledgment form, they can establish paternity without going to court.

If either parent still denies the alleged father's paternity or refuses to sign the Paternity Acknowledgement, they will go to court, and the judge will decide whether or not he's the father. DNA testing to prove that the man is or isn't the father will likely be ordered by the court.

In Martinez, GA, orders for custody, visitation, or child support payments will not be given until paternity is established. During the time before paternity is established, the mother cannot be ordered by the court to allow visitation by the alleged father. After paternity is established, the judge decides what is in the best interest of the child before giving orders.
