News Events Relating to Substance Use in Manteca, CA

In March 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office charged two California men, one from Manteca, for conspiring to sell drugs and firearms over the Internet. The two California residents were charged with intent to distribute various narcotics, conspiracy to unlawfully transport firearms, and possession and transportation of unregistered firearms.

According to reports, undercover agents began communicating with the California suspects after they advertised sales for various firearms and narcotics over social media. During the investigation, law enforcement purchased a collection of drugs and firearms, including heroin and five AR-15 firearms, which later resulted in the suspects' arrests. The two face a mandatory minimum prison sentence of five years and a maximum of 40 years in prison as well as a maximum fine of $5 million.

Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Manteca, CA

In March 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a new master plan aimed at tackling the ongoing fentanyl and opioid crisis taking place across the state. The master plan builds on the Governor's current $1 billion investment in mitigating the crisis, which includes the recent expansion of the California National Guard to help increase fentanyl seizures.

As part of the upcoming 2023-2024 master plan, the Governor now plans to issue an additional $79 million toward the Naloxone Distribution Project to meet the increased demand for the life-saving opioid overdose antidote, Naloxone. To further prevent deadly fentanyl overdose, an additional $4 million will also be used to make fentanyl test strips more widely available across the state.
