Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Mankato, MN
In February 2023, three adults were charged in connection with three separate drug overdoses involving teenagers in Mankato. The suspects were identified after an interview with two of the teenagers, and police were able to issue a search warrant on one of their properties. During this time, two vehicles were searched to reveal 288 fentanyl pills, 3.7 grams of cocaine, and a loaded handgun, resulting in multiple firearm and drug sales charges. Two of the suspects were also charged with child endangerment after law enforcement found their child inside the vehicle where the loaded gun and drugs were discovered.
Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Mankato, MN
In an effort to build a safer opioid prescribing culture amongst Minnesota health professionals, the state partnered with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) in 2020 to develop the Quality Improvement (QI) program. The development of this program stems from the ongoing concerns of rising opioid addiction caused by poor prescribing practices and surveillance across the state.
Under this program, healthcare providers whose prescribing data indicates they prescribe above the community standards will be required by the state to participate in the QI program. Through this program, these participants will be assessed to receive improvement strategies they must implement to better control their opioid prescribing practices and help lower the risk of opioid addiction in patients.
