If we compare Madera County to some other California counties, it has a relatively low drug overdose death rate. However, in 2021, Madera County listed substance overdoses as the 9th leading cause of fatalities. The death rate for the county in 2021 was 22 per every 100,000 residents, which is lower than California's death rate. In 2021, the county had 18 opioid-related deaths. Some of the most often abused substances are fentanyl and methamphetamine. In 2021 alone, three men from Madera County were charged with trafficking these substances.
In addition to substance abuse, the county also struggles with alcohol. In 2019, eighteen percent of adults in Madera County reported heavy or binge drinking. Based on the data between 2016 and 2020, at least 33 percent of all driving deaths involved alcohol.
Madera County announced the biggest drug seizure in its history
In November 2022, Madera County announced its most significant drug bust. The authorities seized 1,300 pounds of methamphetamine, four kilos of heroin, and two kilograms of fentanyl, arrested over thirty people. Four methamphetamine laboratories were shut down. They also seized seven firearms. Officials have been working on the investigation since July 2022, and they discovered that the arrested individuals were working with a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization. This organization imports, manufactures, and distributes methamphetamine in California and neighboring states.
