In 2020, 1,309 people from Georgia died due to opioid overdose. From 2010 to 2020, opioid-related overdoses in the state increased by 207 percent. During the same period of time, stimulant-related overdoses increased even more than opioids, and the deaths grew by 546 percent. In 2020, at least 996 individuals in Georgia died because of stimulants. Similar numbers occurred in 2021, when almost half of all opioid-involved overdose fatalities involved a stimulant.
Between 2019 and 2021, Georgia reported a 55.9 percent increase in all drug overdoses. Fentanyl is one of many factors driving these numbers higher. From 2019 to 2021, Georgia's fentanyl-involved fatalities increased by 218.4 percent.
In 2022, Georgia joined a multi-state settlement agreement with three major pharmaceutical distributors and opioid manufacturers for $26 billion. This means Georgia should receive 636 million dollars for prevention efforts and necessary treatment.
Macon police seized 26 pounds of methamphetamine in the drug operation
More than ten law enforcement agencies led a major investigation and arrested four individuals from Macon. The authorities found 26 pounds of methamphetamine, $25,000, and guns. There were also 154 grams of ecstasy and 87 grams of marijuana. All four were charged and arrested, three without a bond.
