Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Macon DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Macon, GA

In Macon, Georgia, parents must establish paternity if they are unmarried and have a child together. The quickest way to establish paternity in Macon is by signing a Paternity Acknowledgment Form at the hospital after the child's birth. It is also possible to sign it later at the State of Vital Records office. Under Georgia law, the Paternity Acknowledgement Form establishes the legal father but does not establish custody or visitation rights. Since this is a legally binding document, parents should not sign if there are any doubts or disagreements regarding paternity.

Some parents disagree about paternity and file a petition to the court to establish paternity instead of signing a Paternity Acknowledgment Form. The judge will likely order DNA testing. Unless other convincing evidence is presented, the judge will often use the DNA test results to establish the legal father.

DNA test reunited siblings after decades

Maxine Bryant was adopted when she was just three months old. She tried to find her biological family her whole life but always had little success. Then, on a summer day in 2019, she decided to take a DNA test. The DNA test identified one relative—Triplett. At first, contacting her was difficult. Triplett did not respond on social media, and Maxine resorted to contacting a couple of Tripletts friends. Finally, the sisters were able to reconnect. Maxine met her three sisters in Macon, who saw her last when she was a baby.

Triplett, now 27, lived in Atlanta and had no idea her grandmother had another sister. Maxine had five older sisters, and her family could not take care of her sixth child, so they gave her up for adoption to an older couple who had endured seventeen miscarriages. Her adoptive parents told her the truth, and when she was seven, she reconnected with her father.

Now, she finally met her sisters, and they started to talk daily. They even planned a road trip to Indianapolis, where they once lived as a family.

Benefits of Establishing Paternity in Georgia

There are many reasons to establish legal paternity in Georgia. Not only does doing so give a child a greater sense of identity, but it also comes with legal benefits. According to Macon-area attorney Christine M. Cruse, seeking legitimization can give the child rights including:

child_care
Financial support from both parents
child_care
Insurance benefits from either parent
child_care
The right to receive an inheritance from the father
child_care
Information about the father's medical history

In addition, once paternity is legally established, the father can exercise his rights to visitation and custody. He can also have a say in how the child is raised, including the school they go to, healthcare decisions, religion, and extracurricular activities.
