In late 2022, the Colorado Naloxone Project announced an expansion to its operation called the MOMS (Maternal Overdose Matters) initiative. Naloxone, also commonly known as Narcan, is a type of medication used in emergency situations of opioid overdose to reverse deadly side effects. Under this new program, state health officials are pushing to send at-risk new mothers home with Narcan following their child's birth to reduce overdose deaths across the state.

The MOMS initiative is aiming to make Narcan kits part of regular postpartum care for new mothers that have a history of opioid abuse or those that are prescribed opioids following birth-related procedures, such as cesarean sections. Out of 48 maternity wards in Colorado, 14 locations have currently signed on for the program, with officials hoping to have 100% participation by October 2023.
