Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.
Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Louisville DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Establishing paternity in Louisville, KY
In Louisville, paternity can be established in two ways. The mother and the father can sign the Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity (VAP), or they can file a paternity lawsuit in district court for the judge to decide paternity.
Signing the VAP is the easiest way of establishing paternity. Both parents must agree that they are the child's biological parents and sign this form. If either party signs the VAP and changes their mind later, they have 60 days from signing to cancel.
Another option is establishing paternity through the court. If both parties are in agreement regarding who the father is, the judge will issue an order that needs to be signed by the father. If they disagree on who the father is, there will likely be a DNA test. If the DNA test proves who the father is, the judge will issue an order, and the father's name will be added to the child's birth certificate.
Some benefits of establishing paternity can include:
DNA test reunites Kentuckian family reunited after 60 years
When Melissa Schellenberg and Bobbie Batke were growing up, their mother told them they had two other siblings, but she had no idea where they were or how to find them. In 2016, after their biological dad passed, their long-lost brother reached out to them. Of course, they were happy to meet him, but a piece of the puzzle was still missing.
In 2019, Elaine Belling decided to take a DNA test. The DNA test results showed that Bobbie's son was her nephew, and she eagerly called him to learn more. After many questions with her nephew and his mom, Elaine and Bobbie realized they were, in fact, sisters! Scheduling a meetup during the pandemic was a little bit complicated, but the sisters managed it. Eager for a family reunion, they even planned a trip so all four of them could be together.
