Longmont, Colorado: Drug abuse trends

In 2020, Colorado investigators reported that they seized almost 50 pounds of fentanyl, which could have been over 55 thousand dosages of this drug. Authorities say that fentanyl has also been an issue at the county level. Overdoses of heroin remain high, but the chances of overdosing increase significantly more when fentanyl is involved.

Robert Valuck, the director of the Center for Prescription Drug Abuse Addiction Prevention at the University of Colorado, says that heroin use is like Russian roulette. For example, if someone takes pure heroin, they have one out of six chances to overdose. However, if the drug contains fentanyl, the chance of overdose increases to 50-50.

Longmont Department of Public Safety and the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative wants to help the city's residents suffering from substance abuse. They created an Angel Initiative, which aims to encourage individuals who suffer from substance use disorder to seek recovery. They also connect Angel participants with treatment programs and facilities rather than arresting them. The Angel Initiative also helps those in recovery find employment opportunities and treatment programs.
