Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Long Island City, NY

In April of 2018, A Long Island City man was arrested after a drug bust. The man, along with three others, was arrested for the distribution of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine to major suppliers in New York.

Dionne Sharrow, a resident of the Powerhouse Building in Long Island City, was supplying the other three men with large amounts of narcotics. The other men were charged with the sale of a controlled substance, conspiracy, and other charges.

Police began monitoring the men after the overdoses of a 26-year-old man in 2016 and a 42-year-old man in 2017. Both overdoses were fatal. Investigators conducted a year-long wiretap investigation.

Sharrow kept his drug stash in a Brooklyn apartment. In the apartment, officers found 10 kilograms of various narcotics in an oven, cash, drugs, and several pounds of marijuana. Another search, conducted on Sharrow's apartment in Long Island, led to the seizure of a loaded firearm, cash, and in the garage, a red 2015 Lamborghini Huracan.

Police discovered that the two fatal overdoses were supplied by a dealer who purchased the drugs from one of these men. Further investigation led to the arrest of nine other associated dealers.

In 2017, a Long Island City man and a woman from New Jersey were charged with the conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, and distributing and possessing with intent to distribute. The two individuals were producing and distributing designer drugs, including a synthetic opioid.

The man produced and distributed drugs through two online companies he ran, and products were mailed out to customers. These substances were linked to a 2016 fatal overdose in Wisconsin.
