Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Livingston, TX

In May 2023, a traffic stop on Highway 59 led to two arrests and the seizure of drugs. Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies stopped the vehicle for traffic violations and arrested the driver, a 62-year-old Livingston resident, for the traffic offense. Before towing the vehicle, officers conducted a search, discovering five large plastic bags full of pills containing fentanyl. The other man, also from Livingston, was arrested, and both men were taken to the Polk County Jail with a first-degree felony charge of manufacturing and/or delivery of a controlled substance.

Recent Local Laws Passed Regarding Drug Use

Livingston drug laws include HB 3144, passed in 2023, which designates October as Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month. The law was passed to increase awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and overdoses. The Fentanyl Response Communications Took Kit was designed to help school systems spread awareness. The toolkit provides resources to students, educators, school counselors, and families and for schools to help educate faculty, students, and parents. In addition, HB 3908, called Tucker's Law, requires the school health advisory council to recommend to the board of trustees the appropriate curriculum and grade levels for learning about the dangers of opioids, including synthetic opioid abuse, like fentanyl, and addiction. According to §38.040, school districts and open-enrollment charter schools must also provide annual research-based instruction on drug poisoning awareness and fentanyl abuse prevention.
