Georgia Sees Spoke in Fentanyl-Related Overdose Deaths
The use of opioids, and Fentanyl in particular, has been increasing throughout the United States. Sadly, Georgia is no exception. When the state shut down in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fentanyl-related overdose deaths skyrocketed by more than 60%.
In the first three months of 2020, the state saw 140 deaths. From mid-March through June, the number of deaths shot up to 226. Amid these statistics, Jeff Breedlove with the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse has been imploring officials to address the problem by expanding funding for recovery.

While Fentanyl use is a major concern, it's not the only drug that's causing issues in the state of Georgia. In 2017, the state experienced 1,014 opioid-related deaths. Since then, the numbers have continued to grow exponentially. Statistics show that there are approximately 71 opioid prescriptions written per every 100 people in Georgia. This is significantly higher than the national average of 59 per 100.
The use of stimulants, like cocaine and methamphetamine, and prescriptions like Adderall and Ritalin, are also a problem in Georgia. Between 2016 and 2018, Georgia's stimulant-related overdose deaths increased by 44%, from 487 to 703. In 2018, the bulk of these overdose deaths were related to amphetamine use.
